Teams - Reserves
Double over University
Posted at 8:26am 22-04-2008 by DS

Dawlish Town Reserves 5 University of Exeter 1

For the first time in many weeks Manager Richard Woods was able to field a near full strength side for this Monday night game against the University of Exeter who were sitting six places above Dawlish in the Devon and Exeter League table at kick off with  Exeter University were out for revenge for the 5-2 loss to Dawlish earlier in the season at their home ground. Both teams started well looking to dominate the midfield, 10 minutes into the game 16 year old Damien Furnivall picked up the ball on the edge of the University area, turned the defender and hammered the ball past the outstretched keeper to give Dawlish the lead. Dawlish continued to pressure the University and started to play some great football, Liam Jones collected the ball on the edge of the centre circle in his own half from defender James Spence and weaved his way past five defenders to the edge of the University area to crack the ball home for the best solo goal of the season. This gave the home side a 2-0 lead going into the half time break.
Both sides came out looking for the advantage after the break and it paid off for the University when 10 minutes into the half they pulled a goal back. From the kick off Dawlish Town forward Gary Hodgeson passed the ball out to the left wing where Dave Walker, who was having an excellent game, he took the ball around two defenders and let fly with a shot that found it's way passed the keeper to restore the two goal cushion. Dawlish Keeper Niall Herbert pulled off two excellent saves to keep the University at bay, but Dawlish settled on their lead and continued to play great football, The two Dawlish wide players, Dave Walker and Sean Stoneman began to supply the two front players Gary Hodgeson and Damion Furnivall which continued to pay off when Hodgeson added to his seasons tally with two more goals before the end of the game to give Dawlish a 5-1 victory.
"I am proud of the way the team played today" Commented Manager Richard Woods, "All of them worked hard for each other, and the second half showed what good football they can play. The average age of the tem tonight was 18 which's shows how our youth system is starting to pay off. We had three sixteen year olds out there tonight and they excelled themselves."
General Manager, Derek Spence added, "On tonight's showing Chris Myers has decided to take three of the youngsters to Frome for Wednesday nights first team game in the Western League Premier Division, now we have secured the runners up position we want the youngsters to experience football at the higher level, on tonight's showing we could   take all 14 players. Joe Crooks who has been a regular in the first team squad for the last 10 weeks will be going, alongside Liam Jones and James Spence, all three are only 17 which speaks volumes of the youth set up at Dawlish Town. Next season we will be building on this and the football in the Community programme when we will hopefully see more players come through from the youth system and progress to higher levels.
The reserves are back in action at Sandy Lane on Saturday against Exeter Civil Service with a 3pm kick off.

Home Defeat
Posted at 5:13pm 17-02-2008 by DS

Te Reserves came to this home game on the back of a good away win against Newtown, but for this game midfield stalwart and captain Neil Cleave was missing from the line up. this bought down the average age of the team to 18 which clearly shows that the Dawlish Town youth policy is starting to pay off. The game started with the usual frantic work by both teams, looking to gain the advantage, Dawlish battled away working hard with Marcus Pritchard stepping into the midfield role along side Lee Fenner. After 20 minutes Sean Stoneman picked the ball from a cross by Liam Jones turned and with a cracking effort hit bar. The Dawlish team were working well down the left with James Spence and Liam Jones linking up well. With 40 minutes gone the Dawlish defence went to sleep, a ball crossed from the right went across the penalty area to be tapped in with ease by the Halwill forward, with the defence caught flat footed and rooted to the spot. The score stayed the same into the half time break.

The secod half started much as the first. Dawlish continued to push forward and pin Halwill back for the first 15 minutes. Forward Gary Hodgson came close with a back header which hit the bar. Sean Stoneman and Liam Jones came close with efforts from the edge of the box, but Dawlish could not break the duck. Halwill had a break forward and again the defence went to sleep, the first effort was blocked by a great save from keeper Niall Herbert but the rebound went straight to the forward who on the second atempt scored the second for Halwill. Dawlish did not let their heads drop and continued to find away through, but despite all their hard work could not pull the goals back and the game finished 2-0 to Halwill. "The team played very well and did not deserve to lose," commented team Manager Richard Woods, "Bearing in mind this is such a young team they played football and showed maturity beyond their years. Four of the reserve team players will be gaining further experience this week when they will be playing in the first team on Wednesday when Dawlish Town take on Plymouth at home at Sandy Lane with a 7.30 kick off."

Immediately after the game, Chairman Dave Fenner accompained by the 3 amigo's Craig, Lee and Alex Fenner sped off in a fast car to catch a flight to Geneva. The rumour on the grapevine is that it is to complete a deal to take over another football club. A club spokesman declined to confirm or deny the persistant rumours. It was later confirmed that they had just gone for a skiing holiday.

Away to Newtown
Posted at 4:25pm 10-02-2008 by DS

Dawlish Town Reserves were looking for revenge for the earlier January defeat against Newtown. The Dawlish team had new signings Ishamiar Camera and Steve Gratton available for the game along side a near enough full strength squad. The game started with both teams trying to push forward and take the upperhand, but it was Newtown who took advantage from an attach down the rightside as the Dawlish defence went to sleep and a cross through the box saw an easy sidestep in for the Newtown forward for them to take the lead. In what can only be described as a bizzare incident Newtown were awarded a penalty by the referee when Lee Fenner was judged to have obstructed the Newtown forward. The Newtown forward stepped up to put the penalty kick away to increase their lead to 2-0. The rest of the first half continued in the same vein with can only be described as some extra ordinary refereeing by the man in the middle for both sides, which continually broke up the run of play. Dawlish went in 2-0 down at the half time break.

The second half started with Dawlish stepping up a gear after, and with the introduction of Steve Gratton to the midfield Dawlish were on top of the game. Ben Smith and Gary Hodgson playing up front for Dawlish began to cause problems for the Newtown defence, which paid off when Ben pulled a goal back for the Seasiders. This gave the away side further momentum, with the midfield trio of Lee Fenner, Sean Stoneman and Steve Gratton taking control of the game. Dawlish pulled level 10 minutes later when full back James Spence beat one Newtown player took the ball forward and struck the ball from 25 yards, captain Neil Cleave promptly fined him for the goal celebration. (The team have not heard the last of this one!) Dawlish pushed forward again and  with Liam Jones joining the midfield in place of the Sean Stoneman who was outstanding, but once again some interesting refereeing decision held the score level at 2-2. With fifteen minutes to go, Joe Crook added to his seasons tally to six and put Dawlish 3-2 up. Dawlish continued to pile on the pressure with Gary Hodgson having two chances cleared off the line, and Ben Smith hit the bar. Newtown had a chance in the last few seconds of the game but their forward put the header over the bar. Dawlish took the match 3-2.

Man of the match for Dawlish was Lee Fenner for his outstanding second half display in midfield.

This was the first game that Richard Woods who recently joined the management team of the reserves had a chance to the team play and was full of praise for his new team. "The team play as a team and their heads never went down even when the score was 2-0, it shows how much playing for Dawlish and this win meant to them. They are a good bunch of lads." Despite this well won victory there was criticism from a former member of Dawlish Town who believe that amusing comments "belittle" the fine name of Dawlish Town. Perhaps they should remember the last comment our managers say to the players before they go on to the pitch,

"Above all go out and enjoy yourselves!"

So on that note in the future players please note: Music in the dressing room is banned, no more strippers and WAG's will be allowed in the dressing room at half time, Alcohol is banned from consumption seven days before each match and if anybody is caught enjoying themselves they will be asked to go and join the bowls club across the road! As a result of these new club rules both Derek Spence and Keith Fenner have left the reserves management team to take up new positions at Leeds United replacing Denis Wise and Gus Poyet. Chairman Dave Fenner has wished them well on their journey, but has asked if they could bring back the goal post in time for next weeks home game!

Humiliating defeat away to Bow A.C.C.
Posted at 4:02pm 03-02-2008 by DS

The Reserves travelled to top of the table Bow A.C.C. and for you who are not well versed in the geography of Devon is locate in the back and beyond past Crediton in mid-Devon. With the playing conditions to say the least not suitable to the beautiful game, by way of the pitch in the same condition as a public park locate in Kabul, the rain and wind coming directly from from the Russian Urals and the tempreture at minus 2 the Seasiders knew it was gonig to be hard. From the kick off it was clear that Bow had planned for the match with the introduction of some players who were not present in the previous meeting between the two teams earlier in the season when a tight fought and close game ended with Bow the winners after scoring the winner with two minutes to go, Bow immediately pushed forward and 10 minutes into the game took the lead. The home team  waged an onslaught to the Dawlish Goal and when the Dawlish defence went to sleep they scored their second. Fifteen minutes into the game Dawlish began to settle and pushed the home team on to the back foot for twenty minutes. Simon Frost took a long throw from the righthand side of the Bow half, the ball bounced off the head of the Bow defender and the head of Dawlish midfielder Neil Cleave into the corner of the goal. The referee, who incidently was the at his home club, immediately blew his whistle and disallowed the goal, stating nobody had touch the ball from the throw in. The Dawlish team lost concentration and let Bow back into the game, taking advantage of the situation and some bad defending from Dawlish scored three more quick goals before the half time break, with Marcus Pritchard - Student - being at fault on three occasions due his excessive alcohol intake the previous evening

Dawlish changed the line up for the second half with Owen Last coming on for the injured Alex Fenner in the centre of defence. The game continued in a simular vein, with Dawlish on the back foot. Dan Scott came on to make his debut for Liam Jones on the left and Tom Poulter replaced Sean Stoneman who had once again impressed in the left of midfield as did Lee Fenner playing right midfield. Bow pushed forward and scored three more goals  before Joe Crooks pulled one back for the visitors with his sixth goal of the season, after meeting a Neil Cleave free-kick with his head in the six yard box. Joe then nearly scored again when a second headed attempt crashed into the cross bar. The game ended with the very flattering result of 8-1 to Bow.

After the game the Management team met with Chairman Dave Fenner to discuss the future of the reserves, the recent shock resignation of Rob Colman and the recent approach by an un-named championship club for the management team. After discussions lasting into the wee small hours of the night Dave Fenner emerged to read the follow statement: "After tonight's discussions with both Derek Spence and Keith Fenner, I am glad to announce that both will be staying with the club and not leaving to take over at the championship club. I can confirm that I was approached earlier in the week asking for permission to speak to both managers. It has been agreed to bring in a new management team to run the Reserves to free up both Derek and Keith for special duties within the club, and that both will be given substantial pay rises, expence accounts and a new company BMW. I am saddened by Rob Colman's resignation as joint manager, but I also happy to announce he will be continuing his work in the clubs programme and will still be part of Dawlish Town AFC. I will be releasing the names of the new management team within the coming days."

Defeat at home to Upottery
Posted at 9:59pm 28-01-2008 by DS

After a poor start to the new season, the Seasiders were looking to improve on this against middle of the table Upottery. Dawlish started the game with a couple of the regulars missing but with new signings Gary Hodgson and Jimmy Hill in the line up for the first time, which meant a re-shuffled team taking to the pitch. The first 20 minutes saw Dawlish struggle against the opposition having difficulty working to the new line up, Niall herbert in the Dawlish goal pulled off a couple of excellent saves but Upottery took the lead when a string of defensive errors let them stroll into the penalty area and score with ease. This helped Dawlish to focus, with Simon Thorne and Lee Fenner starting to take control in the midfield the team started to settle but Dawlish went in 1-0 down at half time.

The second half saw Dawlish come back into and take control of the game. Playing more as a unit they started to pile pressure onto the visiting side. Gary Hodgson and Jimmy Hill started to work together up front and supported by the midfield, they soon started to bombard the Upottery goal, even the introduction of Bryn Risdale up front could not help Dawlish get the goal needed to put them back into the game, and the score remain the same 1-0 to Upottery.
